“Mariya Bilyan’s images give me the sensation of seeing into the mysteries of fleeting yet intimate moments, and her remarkable and rare photogravure prints bring the mystery into reality right before our eyes”
— Joel Meyerowitz
I am a London-based visual artist working primarily with photography. I was born in Ukraine just before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Growing up during the challenging yet transformative years in Ukraine formed in me a certain attraction to the melancholy and mystery of human existence.
My creative career began in classical music, where I learned to love and appreciate the value and depth of emotional expression. Music transported me to a world of dreams and hopes. During my university years, where I studied History and Theory of culture, I developed a deep interest in philosophy and a passion for art.
Following my graduation from Central Saint Martins College in London, I became fascinated by early photo printing processes, especially Photogravure. Drawing inspiration from Alfred Stieglitz and Frantisek Drtikol, Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch and Käthe Kollwitz, I have been developing my own visual language, which has led me to work with a modern version of Photogravure, Photopolymer Etching.
This technique allows me to explore the space between the abstract and the tangible. The handcrafted process enables me to not only experiment with texture and form, but also translate intimate moments of everyday reality into a visual language that is both personal and expressive. I am drawn to capturing images that suggest a story without explicitly telling it - brief glimpses into an emotion, a memory, or a feeling that leave a lasting impression.
